College Counseling

As a Jesuit, Catholic college preparatory school, Seattle Prep provides a comprehensive college counseling program for every student. Our objective is to help students find the best fit for themselves, academically, socially, financially, and spiritually. We strive to ensure students and families are informed and empowered throughout the college process.

Overview

The college counseling program at Seattle Prep is grounded on the premise that the college application process, like all of the experiences Prep provides, is an opportunity for learning and growth. Building on the skills students develop to think deeply and make decisions based on research, analysis and self-awareness, students are encouraged to thoughtfully explore their post-secondary options and apply to schools that will be a great fit for them academically, socially, and financially. The college counselors use their extensive experience to help students and their families engage with the process, ask good questions, and ultimately make choices that will best serve their hopes and goals.

Support throughout the process includes:

Individual meetings with students and families to assist in the college exploration and selection process
A sequence of student and family group meetings to provide information, resources and support for the college admissions process
Yearly financial aid and standardized testing presentations
On-site visitation by over 100 college admissions directors and representatives each year
Access to a web-based software program that links students, families and school personnel to important resources and that manages the application process

Due to the passage of the FAFSA SIMPLIFICATION ACT the FAFSA is getting a make-over and will be available for the class of 2024 beginning in December 2023. (See document below for a summary of the changes). This means students will need to check each college’s financial-aid page to see what they will require and when. For example, some colleges may require a preliminary financial aid form generated by the college for students applying early.

We will be hosting a virtual financial aid information night for parents on September 26. We will review the process, including information about the two most commonly required forms, the FAFSA and the CSS Profile. We will share more up-to-date date information about the FAFSA changes at that time.

Most financial assistance for college comes from the federal government and the colleges themselves. In addition, there are outside scholarships that students can apply for. These are often smaller in size and very competitive. We have included some resources and websites in this document.
