  • In Memoriam
Tucker McHugh '67, Representing Generations of Support
Lisa Fernandez

They say that legacy is not leaving something behind for other people.

It's leaving something behind in other people. This is no truer than the life lived by alum Tucker McHugh '67. The McHugh Family Name is legendary in the history of Seattle Prep. It is Tucker's grandfather, T.C. McHugh, who donated $65,000 in 1919, to help the struggling Jesuit Seattle College acquire the current property on which Prep resides. Tucker once said, "My grandfather passed away in 1934, after losing everything in the Great Depression. The one thing that could not be taken away from him was his investment in Seattle Prep. It was the best investment he ever made."

The investment went beyond financial, it was also an investment in people. Both Tucker's father, Tom McHugh '26, and his uncles, Nace McHugh '39 and Chuck McHugh '42, attended Seattle Prep as well as Tucker's brothers-Mick McHugh '61 and Frank McHugh '69. Tucker later attended Seattle University and earned a degree in Business Marketing and Management.

Tucker was as industrious as many of the McHugh family members and was co-owner of Caffe Appassionato founded in 1990 in the heart of Fisherman's Terminal in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood. Caffe Appassionato is known for its roasting process (lasting two to three times longer than other bigname masteries and resulting in a "low acid stomach-friendly blend"), where they still roast every batch by hand. Amongst the various blends available, the company offers a Jesuit blend named after St. Ignatius and St. Xavier.

Over the years, Tucker generously donated his coffee to Seattle Prep for various events and it became a mainstay in the faculty and staff breakrooms.

Tucker is survived by his siblings - Mick McHugh '61, Frank McHugh '69, Kathleen "Mud" McHugh, and Sheila (McHugh) Magnano - as well as wife, Mimi, sons Gavin, Patrick (wife, Morgan), Reilly, Connolly (wife, Katie), and grandson Brayden. Classmate Pat Moriarity '67 shared the following: There are all kinds of genius in the world:

  • intellectual genius of Albert Einstein
  • athletic genius of Michael Jordan
  • musical genius of Yo Yo Ma
  • creative genius of Picasso
  • political genius of Abraham Lincoln.

Then there's Tucker McHugh's kind of genius: a genius for friendship—devoted, unswerving, uncompromising, eternal friendship. Tucker has lived a life of character, practiced his faith with devotion, and walked his talk with a deep, abiding resolve. He would be the first to admit that his dear wife, Mimi, has been the source of his inspiration. The two walk, hand in hand, led by the light of their Catholic faith and the dictum of the Jesuit way, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, for the greater glory of God. It's been said a true friend is "the first person who comes in when the whole world has gone out." That summarizes in a nutshell how so many viewed Tucker McHugh.

There is no one I consider more emblematic of the good heart of our school careers than Tucker. His joy and laughter have always been the ebullient soundtrack of what was great about Prep."

- Kevin Miller '67 Educator, Poet and Classmate of Tucker McHugh
